MyoCraft Myofunctional Therapy Goals

Our goals at MyoCraft are to provide ethical, and professional based services in the development, treatment and improvement of many myofuctional disorders. Our focus is to improve and promote:

1. Nasal breathing, day and night

Our noses are designed to trap bacteria, viruses, dust, and molds before they can enter the lungs. Nasal breathing filters, warms, and moisturizes the air we breathe. Nasal breathing also releases nitric oxide into the body which plays a significant role in the health of the cardiovascular system, increases oxygen in the blood, and reduces blood pressure.

2. Proper lip seal

Our lips should be together, naturally and comfortably, day and night. When your mouth is closed, and your lips are together, you sleep better, and lower your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

3. Correct tongue posture

The tongue is meant to fill up the entire roof of the mouth. If your tongue is in the right place, the teeth grow in straighter, and the face will develop properly. When the tongue rests low in the mouth, it can obstruct the airway and lead to forward head posture. At night, the tongue can fall back into the throat and cause issues such as snoring, sleep disordered breathing, and even sleep apnea.

4. Correct swallow pattern

Did you know that we swallow approximately 600 times per day? Correct swallowing depends on a proper relationship between the muscles of the face, mouth and the throat. When the tongue, or the muscles of the face/mouth aren’t functioning correctly, other muscles of the face and neck have to compensate for the actions that those muscles can’t do on their own. This makes the muscles more prone to tension and fatigue. An open bite swallow, or a tongue thrust sees the tongue pushing the anterior front teeth forward, with only the posterior teeth in occlusion. If the tongue is not re-trained, problems with orthodontic treatment, speech, dental health, sleep disordered breathing  may persist and worsen throughout life.

Did you know….?

People who are tongue-tied often breathe through their mouth, and usually will experience a variety of myofuctional symptoms and problems. Headache, TMJ pain, clenching and grinding, along with dental and orthodontic issues are quite common.

Mouth breathing in children leads to problems with facial growth and development, and can often be a sign of larger underlying health issues.
